The street presence of the Mosman House is deliberately quiet—humble even—while its interior unfolds gradually, revealing more complexity and openness as one moves toward the harbour reserve. What begins as a sequence of calm, private rooms expands into spatially rich family areas that open fully to landscape and light.
The house is conceived as two pavilions flanking a central courtyard. The front pavilion contains bedrooms and amenities; the rear pavilion, oriented to nature, accommodates a series of living spaces and a generous study. The kitchen and dining room occupy the uppermost level of this rear pavilion—below the entry due to the steep fall of the site—now elevated to command extraordinary views. Beneath them, the main living room steps down into the topography, becoming a dramatic double-height space that reaches outward to the reserve through a large deck, a sunken conversation pit, and a waterfall edge pool.
This pavilion strategy ensures the house sits comfortably within its context, maintaining an appropriate scale while maximising connection to the landscape. The pool, decks and conversation pit extend the living spaces outward, drawing the house toward the harbour reserve. As the building follows the steep descent of the long site, it opens in multiple directions to the garden and views, while solid, windowless side walls protect privacy where neighbours sit close.
Connectivity across the courtyard is essential. Every space benefits from excellent natural light and a view—whether of the harbour, the courtyard garden, or the sky. The courtyard itself is both functional and ornamental: a source of ventilation and cooling, and a lush outdoor room that remains cool in summer. Along its edge, a full-height copper screen becomes a sculptural element, filtering light and animating the interior.
Circulation is consolidated along the eastern boundary, generous in proportion and enriched by borrowed light from the courtyard and the copper screen. Throughout, the architecture is carefully sculpted to capture light and frame views. Side and corner windows splay and shift, breaking down the solidity of the structure and creating moments of delicacy within the robust form.
The secondary living area on the lowest level of the rear pavilion has a lofty grandeur, softened by warm materials, refined detailing, and substantial external screening. Viewed from the garden, the house appears modest in scale, carefully crafted and well settled in its landscape, despite the expansive interior experience it contains.
Sustainability is integral to the project. Batteries are powered by 27 solar panels. Alongside standard measures such as rainwater harvesting, high-level insulation, and low-energy lighting, the house was conceived from the outset to minimise energy use. The courtyard plays a central role, providing abundant natural light and cross-ventilation to all living spaces, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and air-conditioning. Cross-ventilation ensures that air conditioning is needed only on a handful of days each year. High mass construction and extensive planting help regulate the microclimate naturally.
A green roof provides insulation and extends the landscape, offering a soft outlook from upper rooms. Glazing—essential for connecting the house to its setting—is limited to the north and south facades and uses high‑performance low‑e double glazing. The façade articulation provides natural shading in summer and optimises solar gain in winter. Heating is delivered via an efficient low‑temperature hydronic system, offering gentle, consistent warmth.
Overall, the Copper House is both ambitious and graceful—an intricate piece of architecture that remains, above all, a deeply comfortable family home.
